PROFILE

RUTSUKO SAKATA

In the beginning of the eighties I come across "felt" when I was studying textile weaving in Finland. I went back to Japan and there in Nara I saw more than a 1200-year-old beautiful felt carpet, "KASEN", at Shosoin, the Emperor's treasury. Since then felt has fascinated me enormously. I began to make felt at that time, around 20 years ago.

Making felt is a very exciting ancient technique; one can even make three dimentional forms and use dyed wool colours mixing together extraordinarily. Nowadays in my works I often use wool together with thin silk cloth; this way I'm able to make the felt thinner. By chance, nine years ago I came to Fiskars, and since that I have been living and working half a year in Fiskars and half a year in Japan. The meeting of two cultures us very stimulating to me. My main theme is always nature and particularly the forest with its many kinds of trees and flowers. Forests absolutery charm me.
